Discomfort Foods

A week or so ago, I posted about my favorite comfort foods—and I loved reading about the foods that other people are comforted by.

But what about those foods that make me want to hurl? Yep, I have a few of those, too. Here they are:

1. Olives—they are salty and sour. Blech. For the life of me, I don’t understand why people like them.

2. Mashed potatoes—yes, that’s right. I HATE mashed potatoes. I can eat french fries and even baked potatoes (with the appropriate dousing of sour cream), but the mushy texture of mashed potatoes makes me want to vomit. And as a matter of fact, when I was very little and my Dad tried to make me eat mashed potatoes, that’s just what I did. I said I was going to gag if he made me eat them, and gag I did. He never tried to make me eat mashed potatoes again.

3. Frozen peas—I can eat fresh peas and canned peas, but for some reason, when frozen peas are cooked, they both smell and taste disgusting to me. They don’t even taste like peas to me—they taste like freezer burn.

4. Salmon loaf—now don’t get me wrong, I love love love fresh salmon. In fact, it’s probably one of my favorite types of fish (second only to fried walleye). But salmon loaf is an ENTIRELY different thing. For those of you who’ve never had it, I have procured a picture of the putrid pink concoction for you to enjoy.

It even looks disgusting, doesn’t it? I remember when I was a kid, and my Mom would decide to cook salmon loaf (I think she bought the pre-made frozen salmon loaf). The whole house would fill with that foul, fishy odor. And the taste—well, let’s just say that whenever my Mom made it, I opted to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich instead. I absolutely can’t stand the taste of salmon loaf.

5. Blue cheese—now why on earth would someone deliberately choose to eat mold? I just don’t get it. Now, I have recently realized that I can somehow stomach some types of blue cheese salad dressing—but generally only if it’s accompanied by buffalo wings. I still can’t eat it on salad. Sour, moldy cheese is pretty much the opposite of appetizing to me.

Okay, now that I’ve thoroughly lost my appetite just thinking about these foods, perhaps you can all enthrall me with tales of tastes that you just can’t stand.

I agree with everything on your list, except mashed potatoes. The thought of olives makes me want to gag!

Wow, those are some pretty interesting items on your list. I might agree with you on the salmon loaf, but I think, made well, it would be pretty good actually.
I (thankfully) don't have anything in the "hurl" department. There are a few things I don't care for (mostly weird Asian things like cartilage and jellyfish) and some things I won't do on general principle (corn dogs or offal). I used to have a problem with nori and cilantro, but now those are both fine with me.

Wow! I usually agree with you in most things but food isn't one of them I guess. I LOVE Olives. All olives ~ black, green, spanish, greek, olive spread ~ oh, I'm starting to sound like Bubba with shrimp!
I also love mashed potatoes but now I see why the objection to my green ones on St. Paddy's day.
I'll have to take your word on the salmon loaf cause there is no way in hell I'd even try that!
Not only do I like blue cheese, I also love Gorgonzola ~ green mold instead of blue ~ go figure!

There are few things I find disgusting.... My number one: Polish Duck Blood Soup ... we had ducks as pets when we kids, so to me, eating a duck (or its blood) is like eating cat or dog. Yeck. Number two... any smoked fish that is left whole. They just look sickening with their raisin like eyeballs. Number three... Head cheese. No explaining needed. Number four.... any internal organ - like tripe, chitterlings, liver, gizzards, etc. Even tongue for that matter. Very gross. Who wants to eat something that can taste you back?

Well, I don't share your same dislikes but I have some of my own. I hate some slimly things - like cherries in cherry pie and cooked spinach. And I really do not like raspberries with chocolate - blach...

I'm with you on everything but the olives....i love green ones but hate the pimentos. You can add bell peppers to the list for me.

I was afraid that you'd hate me for listing mashed potatoes as one of my favorite comfort foods.

But the other day, MathMan made mashed potatoes and I was eating them happily until I discovered an errant hair.

Now if you want to put me off food, add hair. I'm done!

I may be off mashed potatoes for a while.....but I'll still eat olives straight from the jar.

Butter beans. Once, when I was five, my mother was mad because I didn't finish my butter beans at dinner and she made them for me for breakfast the next day and then lunch and then dinner. I finally was able to swallow them and then promptly went to the bathroom and vomited. I have never been able to eat butter beans again.

cabbage...anything with cabbage is disgusting. I agree with you on the olive thing, too...I don't get it...what's is there to like about them? And, I don't care what you say people...fruit and meat do not go together in one dish! Coconut ranks as one of the most, if not the most disgusting food. Even chocolate can't save it. I love beans, but lima beans are disgusting. There's my list of discomfort foods.

LOL, ok, who would post about foods they hate.....love it!
I'm not a huge fan of olives, if a green one is soaked in some vodka it's not bad.
I love any type of potato, well not potato salad, cold potatoes kind of gross me out, but mashed...yummm.
I can only eat frozen peas, or fresh.
Salmon loaf just looks wrong.........yuck
Blue cheese is just ok, not a fan.
My # 1 most grossed out food would be a condiment, mayonnaise, oh just gag me! I can't stand the look or smell, I've rarely tasted it.
Any organ meat....liver.........eek, no over these lips.
Beets......just not tasty
Those are just a couple of things that come to mind.

My brother and I also gagged on mashed potatoes as kids, but we got over it.

I remember that you liked the olive tapenade that Lorraine and I made.

My most unfavorite foods: radishes, lima beans, organ meats (except maw) and beef stew.

I love everything on your list..in fact I eat frozen peas write out of the freezer..no need to cook them they are to yummy.

I spent many nights at our dinner table gagging down spinach. I was forced to eat foods I didn't like, even if I did puke. It was never pretty at our table if spinach and zuchinni were served.

Hey Miss Healthypants! You came to see me. Yay! I came back for a second bite.

Olives - yeah, yuck.

Mashed potatoes - sorry, you lost me there. Love them. Especially with butter.

Frozen peas - huh? All I can think is that you had a bad freezer-burned batch and have never gotten over it. They are fine. Really.

Salmon loaf - funny, growing up, when my mom made salmon patties (never loaf) it didn't bother me. But now thinking about a loaf, well...yuck. It is wrong. If you love fresh salmon, you should come out here. We have lots!

Blue cheese -yummy.

But sauerkraut? BLECH! How about you?
