Train Your Eyes on This

When I got home from work tonight, I noticed that Iwanski was watching a t.v. show that appeared to have train after train after train running down a track.

I went in the bedroom to change out of my work clothes, assuming that he was watching some kind of Western or something.

But then I began to hear things like…

“At Wilmington, Massachusetts, a commuter train approaches with four wooden coaches, occupying the New Hampshire Route main line.”

Huh?

“What are you watching?” I asked.

“Trains,” he said matter-of-factly. “That’s right, I Tivo’d a show that’s just footage of trains from the 1940’s.”

I stared at him and started laughing.

“Really?”

“Yeah,” he replied. “Really.”

I stood there, watching the t.v. for a few minutes in disbelief.

Sure enough, it was just train after train after train, rolling down the track, interspersed by the most boring commentary I think I have ever heard.

So my husband likes to watch footage of trains from the 1940’s. Do you know ANYONE else who likes to do this?

I cannot think of anything I’d rather watch LESS than footage of trains from the 1940’s.

I’m telling you, I’ve been married to this man for almost 14 years now—and I can honestly say that he just gets weirder and weirder every year.

  1. Dear Lord. Iwanski and I could totally hang out. Of course, one would have to hide all the explosives, liquor and sharp objects, but still.

We could write, bore each other with talk of writing and then watch trains.

Dear Lord. MathMan is married to Iwanski! Or worse - you're married to me!!!

    Chilling.

  4. I think that is a Guy thing..trains or cars that go around in circles...easily entertained. Throw them some food every now and then and they are happy as hell.

  7. Maybe it's soothing the way a video of a fire could be soothing.

There's no accounting for taste. My husband is baffled by my continued interest in a Dutch drama aimed at middle schoolers, as well as my ability to watch an endless stream of ICarly episodes. He would find the trains more interesting.

  8. Trains were my father's thing. If he had a TIVO I'm sure he'd being doing this very thing. Although I'm sure he'd want some trains older than the 1940s.

  9. Actually, I think I've seen that documentary three times already.

    (I'm not kidding either)

Those giant articulated steam engines back then were incredible.
Don't EVEN get me started on the 4-6-6's
